A new study has shed light on how caloric restriction (CR) impacts the health and function of pancreatic beta cells, which are crucial for maintaining glucose balance in the body. Researchers found that CR enhances beta cell identity, organelle homeostasis, and energy efficiency, potentially extending the lifespan and healthspan of these vital cells.
Using advanced single nucleus transcriptomics and imaging metabolomics, the study revealed that CR activates key transcription factors and reduces beta cell mitophagy, increasing mitochondrial mass and ATP generation potential. However, the research also showed that CR impairs beta cells’ ability to adaptively proliferate in response to a high-fat diet. Despite this, long-term CR was linked to delayed beta cell aging and reduced turnover, suggesting it may help preserve beta cell function during aging and in conditions like diabetes.
