As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an everyday tool, a recent study has revealed a concerning issue with the technology, covert racism, particularly in how AI handles different dialects. While many of us use AI for everything from writing help to making decisions in hiring, this study highlights a deeper, less visible bias that could have serious consequences.
Language models are the AI systems behind many of the text-based interactions we have with technology today. These models, trained on enormous amounts of written content, are designed to mimic human language. But as these systems become more ingrained in how we work and live, there’s growing concern about the biases they carry.
We’ve known for a while that AI can reflect overt racial biases, such as stereotypes about marginalized groups like African Americans. What this new study reveals, though, is a more subtle, covert form of racism—one that’s harder to spot but just as harmful. Social scientists have pointed out that this kind of covert racism has been on the rise in the U.S. since the civil rights movement, and now it seems, it’s showing up in AI.
One of the study’s key findings is that AI language models show a clear bias against African American English (AAE), a dialect spoken by many African Americans. When the AI encounters AAE, it tends to associate it with more negative stereotypes than any human-based studies have previously documented. For example, text written in AAE was more likely to prompt the AI to suggest less-prestigious jobs or even imply a higher chance of criminal behavior and harsher punishments.
This kind of bias isn’t just about words; it has real-world implications. If AI systems are influencing decisions in areas like hiring or criminal justice, these hidden biases could lead to unfair treatment of people simply because of the way they speak.
What makes this issue even more complex is that while the AI models showed these hidden, raciolinguistic biases, they also tended to generate more positive stereotypes about African Americans on the surface. This discrepancy raises concerns about current efforts to address bias in AI, suggesting that some measures might only be scratching the surface and not addressing the deeper issues.
These findings have serious implications as we continue to integrate AI into more aspects of our lives. The potential harm is significant, especially when these biased systems are used in sensitive areas like employment, criminal justice or healthcare.
Addressing these issues will require more than just quick fixes. We need to rethink how we develop AI, ensuring that it reflects a wider range of voices and experiences. Only by doing this can we start to mitigate the risks and work towards AI systems that treat everyone fairly.
